Ever wondered what you would do if you found yourself locked inside a massive flat-pack furniture store, alone, for days on end? For weeks? No, nor had Purston.
It’s March 2020. Covid 19 is making its presence felt across the globe. In Leeds people are panic-buying pasta and toilet rolls, but Purston Jaglin is more concerned about the part missing from his latest purchase.
He heads to the store to obtain a replacement, leaving Em to travel to Leicester to check on her mum.
Determined not to leave the store without his new part, Purston finds himself locked in, alone, and forced to create a life for himself, oblivious of the unfolding events in the world around him, and with only a store full of self-assembly furniture, stuffed toys and pre-packed Scandinavian food to keep him company.
And the last staff member to leave switched the lights off.
And he isn’t actually alone, but he doesn’t know this.
And Em, Emily, she has gone to check on her mum… hasn’t she?
The Deal is funny and satirical, a quirky tale of decision and indecision, optimism and cynicism, self-absorption and survival, one person’s minor and selfish issues set against the very real problems of the Covid pandemic.
The Deal is published in paperback in a first run of 50 copies. Email me if you would like a copy.
